Thanks for your interest. My diploma is with The British Wheel of Yoga, Governing Body to the Sports Council and, as such, responsible for the standards of teaching and teacher-training in Great Britain. I have been teaching since 1984. All my classes are mixed ability.

The emphasis of The British Wheel of Yoga is safety. That doesn’t mean classes are soft or that every teacher trained by them is cloned. We all bring our own accents into our individual style of teaching, but you can at least be sure with a British Wheel of Yoga teacher that they have been thoroughly trained.

I began yoga in 1978 in the therapy department of Goodmayes Hospital when I had a breakdown (ingloriously sectioned for a month) and was in hospital for five months. I had a history of another five month stay in hospital with a breakdown nine years before that and, in all, seventeen years of trailing round to the G.P. for tranquilisers and anti-depressants. I was stunned with the way yoga sorted me out – my recovery had little to do with psychiatry, which I found appallingly wanting; the psychiatrists tried to persuade me not to try yoga.

So it is that I am particularly interested in how students can be helped when suffering from stress and depression. That doesn’t stop me from working with everyone else with purely physical needs (bad backs, etc.). It just puts a slant on it and I am particularly interested (on a layman’s level) in the workings of the brain.

After fifteen years of teaching one night a week in a leisure centre, alongside the office job, I side-stepped in 2000 to teaching full time. For the best part of ten years my classes have all been privately run, which has enabled me to select appropriate, peaceful venues.

All my classes are mixed ability and everyone works at their own level. We are not fast and furious, but work with concentration on the body and the breath. As my teacher, John Cain, always said, flexibility is not a great deal of use without strength and so we work with both; however, no-one can work to more than their personal optimum, as it is on that particular day. Forcing your body towards a posture is a retrograde step and will only take you further from the possibility of eventually improving or completing the posture. Men are naturally competitive and need to guard against this inclination. Usually, women are more flexible than men, but men are stronger.

My style of yoga? If I have to have a specific label, then Hatha yoga. However, the British Wheel of Yoga encourages all its teachers to explore all styles and adopt and adapt from them what they find to be useful. Therefore, I consider myself a yoga mongrel who follows the basic precept of the Wheel – safety. Oh yes – and I find laughter a fast route to flexibility as well as an invaluable general tonic!

A BWY diploma teacher for 29 years, qualified to run Foundation Course 1 and to observe and assess student teachers. ITEC diploma in Anatomy, Physiology & Massage; On-field assessor in treatment & management of football injuries qualified by F.A. Teach private classes for mixed ability students, also run a class called Gentle Yoga for the Not So Young where we work a slower more gentle approach to asana with pranayama & meditation seated on chairs for stability & comfort. Enjoy running small workshops on the various aspects of yoga teaching in a more personal & intimate way. Feel very strongly that suffers of mental health problems feel isolated, misunderstood, endure judgemental attitudes and many people will distance themselves from them. Have had close & personal experience of this and have taught some beneficial yoga practices – often modified or adapted to suit the individual in-patient in a psychiatric hospital – where I was myself an in-patient. Worked alongside psychiatric nurses and occupational therapists within the hospital. Feel having suffered mental health illness myself, that I am reasonably experienced to be able to be supportive and introduce the benefits of certain yoga practices to other sufferers like myself. Work hard to try to get recognition that mental illness needs to be embraced and not hidden or turned away from because one may feel uncomfortable. Helping people to understand these issues is a major subject that I would wish to become more involved in.

I took up yoga following a neck injury sustained in a climbing accident in my twenties and found the yoga system/approach very helpful. I went to my first yoga class in 1968 and my interest developed from there. I’ve been teaching since 1972 and attended many training courses, seminars, yoga events, training weeks since that year. I don’t follow a specific type of yoga but have been influenced by many high profile teachers and modified my approach to a meaningful style of yoga.

My name is Caroline, I am a British Wheel of Yoga Teacher. I teach pregnancy yoga and run post natal courses. The first thing I hear from people who have never tried yoga is “oh, I’m not flexible enough to do yoga”… Well my belief is first of all that yoga isn’t about ‘doing’ and more about undoing. Stripping away the layers we have built up over the years. You don’t have to be flexible in body to start yoga…but flexible in thinking! The body becomes strong but remains soft, flexibility is a by product of this. Just give yoga a try and if I’m not the teacher for you, keep trying until you find the right teacher to suit you. There is someone for everyone and a yoga for everyone…!

Within this exists “equanimity” — the ‘still place’ of a balanced and fully awake mind.

Thanks for your interest. My diploma is with The British Wheel of Yoga, Governing Body to the Sports Council and, as such, responsible for the standards of teaching and teacher-training in Great Britain. I have been teaching since 1984. All my classes are mixed ability.

The emphasis of The British Wheel of Yoga is safety. That doesn’t mean classes are soft or that every teacher trained by them is cloned. We all bring our own accents into our individual style of teaching, but you can at least be sure with a British Wheel of Yoga teacher that they have been thoroughly trained.

I began yoga in 1978 in the therapy department of Goodmayes Hospital when I had a breakdown (ingloriously sectioned for a month) and was in hospital for five months. I had a history of another five month stay in hospital with a breakdown nine years before that and, in all, seventeen years of trailing round to the G.P. for tranquilisers and anti-depressants. I was stunned with the way yoga sorted me out – my recovery had little to do with psychiatry, which I found appallingly wanting; the psychiatrists tried to persuade me not to try yoga.

So it is that I am particularly interested in how students can be helped when suffering from stress and depression. That doesn’t stop me from working with everyone else with purely physical needs (bad backs, etc.). It just puts a slant on it and I am particularly interested (on a layman’s level) in the workings of the brain.

After fifteen years of teaching one night a week in a leisure centre, alongside the office job, I side-stepped in 2000 to teaching full time. For the best part of ten years my classes have all been privately run, which has enabled me to select appropriate, peaceful venues.

All my classes are mixed ability and everyone works at their own level. We are not fast and furious, but work with concentration on the body and the breath. As my teacher, John Cain, always said, flexibility is not a great deal of use without strength and so we work with both; however, no-one can work to more than their personal optimum, as it is on that particular day. Forcing your body towards a posture is a retrograde step and will only take you further from the possibility of eventually improving or completing the posture. Men are naturally competitive and need to guard against this inclination. Usually, women are more flexible than men, but men are stronger.

My style of yoga? If I have to have a specific label, then Hatha yoga. However, the British Wheel of Yoga encourages all its teachers to explore all styles and adopt and adapt from them what they find to be useful. Therefore, I consider myself a yoga mongrel who follows the basic precept of the Wheel – safety. Oh yes – and I find laughter a fast route to flexibility as well as an invaluable general tonic!

Thanks for your interest. My diploma is with The British Wheel of Yoga, Governing Body to the Sports Council and, as such, responsible for the standards of teaching and teacher-training in Great Britain. I have been teaching since 1984. All my classes are mixed ability.

The emphasis of The British Wheel of Yoga is safety. That doesn’t mean classes are soft or that every teacher trained by them is cloned. We all bring our own accents into our individual style of teaching, but you can at least be sure with a British Wheel of Yoga teacher that they have been thoroughly trained.

I began yoga in 1978 in the therapy department of Goodmayes Hospital when I had a breakdown (ingloriously sectioned for a month) and was in hospital for five months. I had a history of another five month stay in hospital with a breakdown nine years before that and, in all, seventeen years of trailing round to the G.P. for tranquilisers and anti-depressants. I was stunned with the way yoga sorted me out – my recovery had little to do with psychiatry, which I found appallingly wanting; the psychiatrists tried to persuade me not to try yoga.

So it is that I am particularly interested in how students can be helped when suffering from stress and depression. That doesn’t stop me from working with everyone else with purely physical needs (bad backs, etc.). It just puts a slant on it and I am particularly interested (on a layman’s level) in the workings of the brain.

After fifteen years of teaching one night a week in a leisure centre, alongside the office job, I side-stepped in 2000 to teaching full time. For the best part of ten years my classes have all been privately run, which has enabled me to select appropriate, peaceful venues.

All my classes are mixed ability and everyone works at their own level. We are not fast and furious, but work with concentration on the body and the breath. As my teacher, John Cain, always said, flexibility is not a great deal of use without strength and so we work with both; however, no-one can work to more than their personal optimum, as it is on that particular day. Forcing your body towards a posture is a retrograde step and will only take you further from the possibility of eventually improving or completing the posture. Men are naturally competitive and need to guard against this inclination. Usually, women are more flexible than men, but men are stronger.

My style of yoga? If I have to have a specific label, then Hatha yoga. However, the British Wheel of Yoga encourages all its teachers to explore all styles and adopt and adapt from them what they find to be useful. Therefore, I consider myself a yoga mongrel who follows the basic precept of the Wheel – safety. Oh yes – and I find laughter a fast route to flexibility as well as an invaluable general tonic!
