Mary has been practising yoga since 1978 and teaching since 1985. She trained as a nurse and specialised in Continuing care of the terminally ill and Bereavement, eventually going on to work in general practice and has always been interested in empowering people to take charge of their own health and well-being. Her style has evolved greatly over the years and she learns something new every time she teaches. Drawing inspiration from the teachings of Vanda Scaravelli as well as the many teachers she has been privileged to be taught by. She is qualified as a Yoga Therapist with the Yoga Biomedical Trust and teaches 1:1 for many conditions such as Back Pain, Asthma, Hypertension, ME, MS etc. Also a BWY diploma course tutor involved in the initial piloting of the BWYQ level 4 diploma in teaching yoga and now co-tutoring her eighth diploma course. Somatic intelligence inspired yoga is her passion.

Chair Yoga with Mary Mackie

The day is completely interactive and mainly practice based. We begin with a tutor led, chair- based practice aimed at the less able. We will discuss the practicalities and effects of this style of practice in a workshop setting to develop different ways of teaching using chairs. You will learn to design a lesson plan and even a short scheme of work to enhance yoga practice and progression in your students.

The day will also include a more advanced practice using chairs followed by a shared lunch. After lunch students will work in pairs to develop specific sequences that they might teach to their own less-able clients and there will be a session of shared teaching to finish the day.

Chair Yoga for everyone:

The day does not have to be aimed at teachers – it can be adapted to developing a personal practice. So the day would work just as well for any yoga practitioner who would like to learn how to support and enhance their own yoga practice. I have taught chair based practices to do in the office, on an aeroplane, or when physical issues of ageing or illness, (temporary or otherwise) kicks in.
There is always a way to practice yoga – you just need the will!

To bring on the day:

Your usual yoga clothing and equipment, including mat, straps, blocks and blankets.

If you’d like to make notes, bring pen/pencil and paper.

There will be:

Tea and coffee will be provided.

Please bring your own packed lunch, or alternatively there are a number of venues in the Tring town centre from which food may be purchased.

About the venue:

Victoria Hall is in the centre of Tring with easy access to cafes, restaurants and shops.

The train station is a five minute drive from the hall. There is some limited street parking nearby. There is a public car park behind M&S which is entered from Frogmore Street (a five minute walk from the hall). Please note the long-stay car park is at the far end, furthest from the M&S. Slightly further down the High Street is The Forge car park.
